LMXSC Elicits Hubristic Pride and Social Undermining in Individuals with High Trait Dominance

Abstract A consensus in the literature has converged on idea that one's perceptions of being treated better by a leader (compared with coworkers' treatment same leader) motivate prosocial behaviour. Drawing current theory hubristic pride and its evolutionary role status maintenance, we challenge this proposing favourable, downward social comparisons leader‐member exchange (i.e., comparisons; LMXSC) can also lead to undermining. Specifically, argue that, individuals high trait dominance, LMXSC triggers pride, which, turn, motivates Results from two experiments longitudinal field study support idea. In sum, our work shifts showing when why negative coworker‐directed behaviour, it offers practical help organizational leaders dealing ethical decision if, when, preferentially treat individual team members.
